the free tiers in this category mostly don't give you the model. tripo's terms state it retains all rights to outputs generated by free users. meshy licenses free output under cc by 4.0, so you may sell it but must credit meshy. sloyd's free tier is personal use only, and even its $15 plan cannot redistribute or resell — that needs the $50 tier. kaedim goes further and conditions your ownership on keeping an active subscription, which raises a question its terms don't answer about what happens if you cancel.
one licence excludes where you probably live. tencent's hunyuan3d community licence states that it does not apply in the european union, the united kingdom or south korea — the same territorial carve-out tencent's video model carries, unchanged from version 2.0 into 2.1. self-hosting the weights doesn't help; the exclusion is in the licence, not the distribution. it also caps commercial use at a million monthly active users and forbids using outputs to train other models.
the second thing to check is whether the mesh is usable at all. plenty of these produce a render that looks finished and geometry that isn't: meshy's first-pass output is triangle soup that needs a separate paid remesh step, and microsoft's trellis — the only fully unrestricted licence here — outputs baked colour with no pbr maps, exports only to glb, and has no rigging whatsoever. rodin and sloyd are the exceptions, and sloyd gets there by generating parametrically rather than by diffusion, so clean topology and uv maps come by construction rather than cleanup.
two names in every roundup are gone. common sense machines was acquired by google in january 2026 and csm.ai no longer resolves. masterpiece x retired its text-to-3d generator in december 2025 and replaced it with an orchestration tool that isn't a generator at all. neither is ranked, and backflip has narrowed to cad conversion, which is a different product from the one older reviews describe.

the technical answers are the ones a pipeline actually needs. quad-mesh topology at selectable 18k or 50k face densities, with both quad and triangle export. real pbr maps — albedo, normal, roughness and metallic — exported alongside geometry, with a choice between baked shaded output and full pbr. five export formats. and gen-2 outputs characters in an enforced t-pose or a-pose specifically so downstream rigging is straightforward.
on the creator plan that works out around $0.50 a model, which is competitive against tools that hand you geometry needing hours of remeshing.

the output is research-shaped. it generates radiance fields and 3d gaussians natively, with mesh extraction for glb export and a simplify ratio to control triangle reduction. textures are baked colour with no separate albedo, roughness or metallic maps.

the api design is the strength. generation and post-processing are separate stages, so mesh cleanup, texture creation, skeletal setup and motion retargeting can be invoked deliberately rather than bundled — which is how you'd want it in an automated pipeline. four export formats, configurable polygon density, and $13.93 a month makes it the cheapest capable tier here.
the free tier is not a trial of that. tripo's terms state that tripo 'retains all rights ... to outputs ... generated by free users'. models are public, downloads are capped at 15 a month, and there is no commercial use. you are not evaluating the paid product's rights; you are using a different deal.

as an in-workflow feature it does what you'd want: text or image input produces four variants to pick from and refine, in a browser-based editor you may already be using. at $5 a seat on top of an existing plan it's inexpensive to add.
